Frequently asked questions

Questions about tufting cloth

Primary, secondary or anti-slip: how to choose the right tufting cloth for your rug.

Which cloth do I need for tufting?

You tuft into primary tufting cloth. It is specially woven so the needle goes through and the yarn stays in place. Our primary tufting cloth is 100% polyester (225 g/m²) and has a marker line every 50 cm, horizontally and vertically. That makes measuring and designing easier. You stretch it tight on a tufting frame.

What is the difference between primary and secondary cloth?

You tuft your design into the primary cloth. At the end, you glue the secondary cloth onto the back. This keeps the glued yarns in place, protects your floor and gives the underside a neat finish. Our secondary tufting cloth is 100% cotton. You attach it with tufting glue.

Can I use ordinary fabric instead of tufting cloth?

Better not. Tufting cloth is made to hold the yarn and to be stretched tight on a frame. Ordinary fabric from a fabric shop can tear or let go of the yarn. The polyester of our primary cloth has some stretch and is less likely to tear, even when you stretch it tight. Read more in which fabric to use for tufting.

How big should my tufting cloth be?

Allow plenty of cloth: at least 15 cm extra around your design, because the edge is held in your frame. Our primary tufting cloth comes in sizes from 1 x 1 metre to 4 x 4 metres, also in value packs of 3. Also check that the cloth fits the inner dimensions of your tufting frame. Please note: shipping is not free for large cloths on a roll.

When do I use anti-slip cloth?

Is your rug going on a hard, smooth floor, such as wood, laminate or tiles? Then use anti-slip secondary cloth as the backing. It provides grip, leaves no residue and won't damage your floor. The cloth measures 1.8 x 1.8 metres, and you attach it just like ordinary secondary cloth, with latex tufting glue.

How do I give my rug a neat edge?

After gluing, you cut out your rug and finish the edge with binding tape. Our tape is 4 cm wide, 100% cotton and not self-adhesive: you glue or sew it onto the back. That way frayed edges and loose ends disappear. You'll find more for the edges under edge finishing and grippers.
