How to start
Tuft your first rug in 4 steps

Step 1: Transfer your design
Stretch your primary tufting cloth tightly on your tufting frame and draw your design on it. You tuft from the back, so draw it mirrored.

Step 2: Tufting
Follow the lines of your design with your tufting gun, row by row. Cut pile gives a soft, open pile; loop pile gives a pile of small loops.

Step 3: Glue and finish
Coat the back with latex tufting glue and attach secondary cloth. This keeps every stitch in place.

Step 4: Turn it over
Take your work off the frame and turn it over. Even out the pile with a carpet trimmer and finish the edge with binding tape.

Which tufting gun is right for beginners?
The AK-DUO PRO: it tufts both cut pile and loop pile, so you don't have to choose yet. If you only want cut pile, the AK-V PRO is a quiet and fast choice. Compare the three tufting guns in the comparison above, or browse all tufting guns.
What do I need to start tufting?
A tufting gun, primary tufting cloth, wool, a tufting frame to stretch the cloth tight and latex glue for the back. A tufting trimmer or duckbill scissors are handy for finishing. With the tufting starter kit you put everything together in one go.
How much wool do I need for my rug?
That depends on the size, the pile height and the technique. Our tufting wool comes on 500-gram cones; with the wool calculator you can work out in a few steps how many cones you need.
What is the difference between cut pile and loop pile?
With cut pile, the tufting gun cuts through every loop, giving you a soft, velvety surface. With loop pile, the loops stay intact: firmer and with more texture. The AK-DUO PRO does both, the AK-V PRO only cut pile. Read more in the tufting guide for beginners.

Yes: a 2-year warranty on all tufting guns and other electrical products. In the first year after purchase, maintenance of your tufting gun is also free. Not satisfied? You have a 14-day cooling-off period and returns are free.

About tufting
Rug tufting: how to make your own rug
Tufting, also called rug tufting, means shooting yarn through a stretched cloth with a tufting gun, stitch by stitch. You can do it by hand with a punch needle, but an electric tufting gun is many times faster. That way you make a rug, a wall hanging or a runner in your own design and your own colours. You may also know it as carpet tufting; it's the same craft.

What do you need for rug tufting?
The basics are simple. You need:
- a tufting gun;
- tufting cloth to tuft into;
- a tufting frame to stretch that cloth tight;
- tufting wool.

Which tufting gun should you choose?
A tufting gun is also called a rug tufting gun or tufting machine. There are two types of pile:
- cut pile: a soft pile of loose strands;
- loop pile: a firm pile of small loops.
Some tufting guns do one of the two, others do both. The AK-DUO PRO does both: you swap the scissors for a needle and keep tufting. That way you can vary height and texture within one rug.
Tufting wool and tufting cloth
Our tufting wool is 100% New Zealand wool on 500 gram cones. Wool is hard-wearing and moth-resistant, so it suits a rug that gets used. With the wool calculator you work out how many cones your design needs.
There are two types of tufting cloth:
- primary tufting cloth: the cloth you tuft into;
- secondary cloth: you glue this to the back at the end, so your rug turns out neat and sturdy.
