Questions about tufting wool
Everything about our 100% New Zealand tufting wool: usage, cones and colours.
What kind of wool is your tufting wool?
Our tufting wool is 100% New Zealand wool, wound on cones of about 500 grams and 500 metres. The wool is hard-wearing, moth-resistant and repels water and dirt, so your rug can really live on the floor. The yarn runs smoothly off the cone and works in a tufting gun as well as by hand. How much you need is explained in the guide to wool usage.
How much wool do I need for a rug?
For cut pile with a 12 mm pile height, plan on about 2.5 kg of wool per square metre, which is 5 to 6 cones. The exact amount depends on your pile height and how densely you tuft; loop pile uses about a third less. In the free wool calculator you upload your design and see how many grams and cones you need per colour.
How much extra wool should I order?
We recommend ordering about 10 to 15% extra. That gives you a margin for test swatches, small mistakes and touching up edges. Also order each colour in one go: dye lots can vary slightly between production runs, and this way you know for sure that your rug will have an even colour. Not sure yet how much you need? Work it out with the wool calculator.
Is one 500-gram cone enough for my first rug?
For a small piece, yes. One cone covers about 0.2 m² of 12 mm cut pile, such as a 40 x 40 cm wall hanging. For a single-colour 60 x 60 cm rug you need 2 to 3 cones. If you work with several colours, you need at least one cone of each colour. Check your own design with the wool calculator, or read the explanation of wool use.
Can I use the wool in any tufting gun?
Yes. The wool is suitable for tufting guns and for hand tufting, and the cone lets it run off smoothly. For a fuller pile, you can feed two strands through your gun at once. Threading is easy with a threader. No tufting gun yet? Take a look at the tufting guns.
Can I also use acrylic yarn for tufting?
You can. Most tufting guns work with wool or acrylic yarn of medium thickness, as long as the yarn runs smoothly through the gun. For a rug, 100% wool gives a more durable result. If you buy yarn in balls, use a yarn winder to turn it into a cone or cake so it runs off without knots. Also read what you need for tufting.
Why does the colour differ slightly from the photo?
A screen never shows colours exactly like the real yarn, so the wool may differ slightly from the photo. Torn between two shades? Feel free to ask via the contact page. And if you're not satisfied, you have a 14-day cooling-off period and returns are free.
