What Do You Need to Tuft?

The Essential Supplies for Rug Tufting

Welcome to Dutch Tufting, where we tell you everything you need to know about tufting. If you’ve just become interested in this fascinating technique, you might be wondering what you need to get started. Don’t worry, we’ve laid it all out for you!

Supplies for Tufting: Step by Step

  • Tufting Gun: An essential tool for tufting. Choose a high-quality tufting gun that is not too heavy and easy to use. Our own model tufting gun is the AK-DUO PRO. We offer a full 1-year warranty because you can be sure of a durable and reliable device.

  • Tufting Fabric: Choose a sturdy fabric like polyester tufting cloth. This fabric must be able to be stretched tightly on a frame and provide enough space for making loops. Commonly used fabrics are polyester, cotton, or jute. By far most tufters use the gray polyester tufting cloth because it doesn’t tear easily and is very easy to stretch.

  • Yarn: Choose high-quality and durable yarn when making a tufting creation to sell or use yourself long-term. However, most tufters choose to buy yarn from craft stores, partly because yarn prices are very high.

  • Frame: A sturdy frame is essential to keep the tufting fabric tight while tufting. Make sure the frame is large enough for the size of your project.

  • Tufting scissors and clipper: A sharp pair of scissors or a carpet clipper is needed to cut yarn and tidy up any loose threads. Many tufters recommend a carpet clipper because it saves a lot of time when fine-tuning your tufted rug. You can shave the carpet evenly with it, and also create smooth color transitions by clipping between the seams.

  • Optional: Glue, secondary fabric, and/or binding tape: Depending on your project and preference, it may be essential to glue the back of the fabric (to keep the yarn in place), use a secondary fabric (to create a professional and soft backing), and binding tape (to cover the edges).

Conclusion: Ready to Tuft!
With these essential supplies, you’re ready to start tufting. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced tufter, the most important thing is to enjoy the creative process and make your own unique tufting creations.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about tufting supplies

From the four basics to the handy extras: this is what you need for tufting.

What is the minimum you need for tufting?

With four things you can already make a rug: a tufting gun, primary tufting cloth, a tufting frame to stretch the cloth tight, and wool. With those basics you tuft your design. For a rug that can go on the floor, you add the finishing. Want everything in one go? Then choose the tufting starter set.

What do I need to finish my rug?

For the back, you need tufting glue and secondary cloth. They lock the yarns in place and give you a neat underside. For the top you use a tufting trimmer or duckbill scissors, and for the edge binding tape. You'll find all finishing materials under trimming and cutting.

Do I have to buy everything separately?

No. The tufting starter set contains the AK-DUO PRO, three sheets of primary cloth and a frame, for less than buying them separately. You choose the colour of the gun and the size of the cloth and the frame. Wool is ordered separately, in the colours that suit your design.

Do I need a projector for tufting?

No, you can also draw your design on the cloth with a thick marker. A tufting projector is handy for complex designs, though: you connect it to your phone via wifi and project your drawing onto the cloth. Keep in mind that you tuft from the back, so your design comes out as a mirror image. Read the full step-by-step guide.

Which small tools are handy for tufting?

A threader makes threading your gun easy. Tufting gun oil keeps the machine running smoothly, and a yarn winder turns balls of yarn into cones. A fabric stretcher helps you stretch your cloth tight, and a lint remover takes fluff off your rug. You'll find them under other items.

Can I build my own tufting frame?

Yes. With four sturdy wooden beams of at least 4 x 4 cm and carpet grippers you can build a frame yourself. Allow an afternoon of work. If you'd rather start tufting straight away, a ready-made tufting frame is set up in about 30 minutes, with the carpet grippers already included.
