Frequently asked questions
Questions about edge finishing and grippers
Gripper strips to stretch your cloth tight, and binding tape for a neat edge.
What are carpet grippers?
Carpet grippers, also called gripper rods or tack strips, are strips with sharp pins. You fit them to your frame and press your tufting cloth onto them, so it stays tight while you tuft. Our carpet grippers are 2.5 cm wide and about 30 cm long. They come included with every tufting frame.
How many gripper strips do I need for my own frame?
One pack of carpet grippers contains 5 strips of about 30 cm, around 1.5 metres in total. Measure the perimeter of your frame and divide it by 1.5 metres. For a 90 x 90 cm frame, with a perimeter of 3.6 metres, you need 3 packs. Prefer a ready-made frame? Take a look at the tufting frames.
How do I finish the edge of a tufted rug?
After gluing and cutting out, you finish the edge with binding tape. You glue or sew the tape along the back of your rug, so frayed edges and loose ends neatly disappear. The tape is 4 cm wide and 100% cotton. For gluing, you can use the same latex tufting glue as for the back.
Is binding tape self-adhesive?
No. Our binding tape is not self-adhesive, so you choose whether to glue or sew it. Make sure the back of your rug is clean and dry, cut the tape to length, apply glue and press it firmly along the edge. Let the glue dry properly before you use the rug. All the finishing steps are in the step-by-step guide.
Which lengths and colours of binding tape are available?
The binding tape comes in grey and white, on rolls of 4 and 20 metres. Grey also comes on a 100-metre roll, handy if you make a lot of rugs. The tape is 4 cm wide and 100% cotton. Besides tufted rugs, you can also use it for craft, upholstery and other DIY projects. You'll find more finishing materials under trimming and cutting.
How do I stretch my cloth without hurting my fingers?
Use a fabric stretcher. It lets you pull the tufting cloth tight and evenly over your frame, without your hands coming near the sharp gripper strips. Even tension helps your tufting gun set the yarn properly in the cloth. You'll find the right cloth under tufting cloth.
