Frequently asked questions
Questions about the tufting frame
Sizes, assembly and what's in the box.
Which sizes of tufting frame are available?
The frame comes in four sizes, measured on the inside: a tabletop frame of 90 x 90 cm and standing frames of 90 x 90, 140 x 90 and 140 x 140 cm. You use the tabletop frame on a table. The standing frames are free-standing and work well for larger rugs and runners. The tabletop frame is also included in the tufting starter set. Read more in which tufting frame you need.
Which frame size suits my rug?
Leave 15 to 20 cm of space on each side between your design and the edge of the frame. For a 60 x 60 cm rug, 90 x 90 cm is just right. For a runner choose 140 x 90 cm, for a larger rug 140 x 140 cm. Buy your cloth generously too: take a look at tufting cloth.
What's in the box with the tufting frame?
You get the frame parts, carpet grippers to stretch the cloth on, screws and bolts, reinforcement brackets, a screwdriver and instructions. You can order extra gripper strips separately as carpet grippers. To stretch the cloth safely and evenly, a fabric stretcher is handy.
How long does it take to assemble the frame?
The frame is ready to use in about 30 minutes. A screwdriver is included, but with a power drill it's even easier. Then you stretch your primary tufting cloth onto the carpet grippers, from the centre out to the corners. What to do next is explained in the step-by-step guide for your first rug.
Can I also use the frame for punch needle?
Yes. The frame is suitable for tufting guns, punch needles and all types of primary tufting cloth. So you can work by hand and with a machine on the same frame. Choosing a tufting gun? Take a look at tufting guns. To finish your rug, you'll also need tufting glue.
Can I build a frame myself?
You can, with four sturdy wooden beams of at least 4 x 4 cm and carpet grippers. Allow an afternoon of work and make sure you have the tools at home. This ready-made frame is set up within 30 minutes, is tight straight away and already has the carpet grippers on board. Read more about both options in the guide for beginners.
