Supplies for Tufting: Step by Step

  • Tufting Gun: An essential tool for tufting. Choose a high-quality tufting gun that is not too heavy and easy to use. Our own model tufting gun is the AK-DUO PRO. We offer a 1-year full warranty on this, because you should be sure of a durable and reliable device.

  • Tufting fabric: Choose a sturdy fabric such as polyester tufting cloth. This fabric should be able to be stretched tightly on a frame and provide enough space for making loops. Commonly used cloths are polyester, cotton, or jute. By far, most tufters use the grey polyester tufting cloth because it does not tear easily and is very easy to stretch.

  • Yarn: Go for high-quality and durable yarn if you are making a tufting creation to sell or use for a long term. However, most tufters choose to get yarn from hobby shops, partly because the prices of yarns are very high.

  • Frame: A sturdy frame is essential for stretching the tufting fabric tightly during tufting. Make sure the frame is large enough for the size of your project.

  • Tufting scissors and clippers: A sharp pair of scissors or a carpet clipper is needed to cut off yarn and remove any loose threads. Many tufters recommend a carpet clipper, as it saves a lot of time during the fine-tuning of your tufted rug. You can use it to shear the carpet evenly, but also to make the color gradient flow smoothly by shearing between the seams.

  • Optional: Glue, secondary fabric and/or binding tape: Depending on your project and preference, it may be essential to glue the back of the fabric (to keep the yarn in place), use a secondary fabric (to create a professional and soft underside) and binding tape (to cover the edges).

Conclusion: Ready to Tuft!
With these essential supplies, you are ready to get started with tufting. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced tufter, the most important thing is to enjoy the creative process and make your own unique tufting creations.
